On July 13th, the 8th World Naginata Championship, organized by the United States Naginata Federation, was held at the University of Colorado Boulder. This quadrennial event, supported by the International Naginata Federation (INF), brings together athletes from Asia, Europe, Oceania, and the Americas. Preceding this global competition, a Tendo-ryu seminar took place on July 10th. Although the seminar lasted only one day, we believe it provided participants with a rich and fulfilling experience.
During the seminar, the Tendo-ryu’s 17th Soke (Headmistress) Kyoko Kimura Sensei delivered an in-depth lecture on the history, essence, and fundamental techniques of Tendo-ryu. With Alex Bennett providing precise interpretation, the seminar offered a valuable learning opportunity for all participants, from beginners to experienced practitioners.
Notably, many newcomers attending the seminar were simultaneously studying modern naginata and Tendo-ryu. We sincerely hope that the knowledge gained during this seminar will enhance their practice of modern naginata as well.
The joint training session progressed from the first dan level upwards, covering techniques up to the advanced levels of the Onaginata-Oku. A highlight of the event was the demonstration by Mitsuru, grandson of the 17th Soke Kyoko Kimura Sensei. For many participants, this was their first opportunity to witness such a performance, which garnered significant attention. The precise Tendo-ryu techniques, passed down from Soke Kimura Sensei to Yuri sensei and then to Mitsuru, undoubtedly left a profound impression on the participants, deepening their understanding of Tendo-ryu's essence.
We earnestly hope that this seminar will contribute to the further international spread of Tendo-ryu Naginata's spirit and techniques.
